A new petition was filed Monday at the State Capitol eliminating certain affirmative action programs. We here at 100 Ideas want to know what you think about the issue of affirmative action. It is the government's responsibility to help minorities and victimized groups until true equality is realized. Government policies fostered and expanded inequality, it must clean up its own mess.
Given how much fear drives racial and ethnic discrimination, we need to have several ways to push a civil public practice of encouraging diversity, generosity, and self-reliance. The undereducated, hopeless, or resentful people who suffer unjust discrimination need to be met by politicians, civic leaders, and teachers who invite them into the wealth of America. Anything else is unhelpful. Many alternatives to this are downright corrosive.
In the beginning affirmative action was probably a good thing. People should be hired on their job skills and not their skin color. By keeping this program and letting blacks feel they deserve this or that because what was done to them in the past that is NOT creating a better future for young blacks. Things are better today and life is what YOU make it. Even though I would beg to differ with the south since some family members have told me some stories of things that went on to or could have happened to blacks they knew. I see a lot of blacks and a good portion of them are famous like rev. sharpton and the such who feel the need to dwell on issues. From what I see on TV, blacks don't focus on rising above their situations and making something more of themselves.
Personally I'm just sick of the whole subject pertaining to affirmative action. Enough already with the subject, some just need to learn to get over themselves.
speaking from my point of view, i have 4 children - 2girls, 2boys - i notice how different my daughters are treated, from my sons. they all attended majority black schools, my daughters excelled, while my sons did not. the boys were categorized in the group of non acheivers - and encouraged not to succeed. in adulthood, i see my daughters successes, and my sons continued trials and errors. neither have been incarcerated; and do not belong to any gang. basically, affirmative action is a must, it is also misused and misguided by persons in authority; which causes, i believe, persons to see it as a negative to all people, than a positive
I feel that affirmative has run its course. Their is still a need for the equal employment laws, but the requirement to prepare and file an annual affirmative action plan/report is a waste of manhours and produces a report that will never be looked at again. In our organization we have diversity and had it long before affirmative action came along. We had minoroties represented that we were not aware of until we had to fill out the form(s). I don't think affirmative action had any affect on our hiring practices.
