I personally think campaign finance laws violate the 1st amendment right to free speech. People can openly produce pornography in this country and state but have to mind their Ps and Qs when helping to fund an election campaign. Not the mention all the freedom a newspaper has to promote (or not) a candidate with no limits as to what they can write.
We need publicly funded campaigns. Otherwise we have (as now) a government of the wealthy corporations, for the wealthy corporations, and by the wealthy corporations. They own both parties and our current election financing system guarantees the continuation of the status quo.
Even your question is slanted -- any comparison of Hsu (who donated to a campaign but is in unrelated legal trouble) and Abramoff (who openly bought and sold access at the highest levels of the GOP with the cooperation of elected officials) is bogus. Is this your example of "fair and balanced"?
