Idea for increased school security

The Oklahoman has a story this week about a new security system in five Oklahoma schools. With the help of a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Homeland Security, "School officials have installed a Lobby Guard security system, which checks each visitor's name against a nationwide registry of sex offenders and violent criminals."

"Orvis Risner Principal Paula Carlile said the system keeps her and other employees aware of who's in the building, how long visitors are in the building and who is checking students out.

Is this a good idea to increase school safety? Or is it an example of excessive government intrusion? Let us know what you think!

This is way too intrusive.

Intrusive??? Fed -up, you must not have little ones in school? I don't want some whack job walking into my kids' school and commiting a crime. I think it is a very small inconvenience considering the prevelance of horrifying events at schools across America and the safety of our children. I hope Oklahoma will get on the ball and do this.

It just seems like privacy has totally disappeared. So a parent made a mistake twenty years ago, now the whole school needs to know just so they can pick up their kid for a doctor appointment! Talk about embarrassing the kid, too, and making them a social pariah. What happened to paying off a debt to society by serving time?

We all should be well aware by now, that ideas to "up security" for every event that makes news, only results in our freedoms and civil rights more a thing of the past.

Can you not make the burden of your safety concerns for your kids, the concerns of us all. I have kids that need exposure to the real world that lies in front of them. If the danger of "whack jobs" is present in a school yard, its present in your home in the cafe, gas station. What measures are in place for their safety when at these locations how much do you feel we all invest for the safety of your kids if it happens to occur there. If you are scared for them while out of your site, make it your responsibility to shelter your kids till 23 yrs old not mine. I fear more the outcome of these kids that one day after having mama hin keep them warm and safe in todays world are let free to discover the cruelties that they will incounter, and how they cope with it. That seems more an issue or really a core to the one we are debating here. May be we found a safety measure to beat all safety measures here. Lets keep it real, and put our money in what the kid knows about self reliancy
