Childhood Obesity

Childhood obesity in America has become an epidemic. Since 1980, the percentage of overweight kids has tripled. Obesity rates in the United States now stands at around 34%.

The Daily Oklahoman recently discussed this problem, read the article here: http://newsok.com/article/3092477.

We want your ideas on what you think is the best approach. What new activities, classes, or programs do you think would help solve this crisis?

Do we still require kids to have physical education?

How about we slow down on our other activities and take our KIDS for a walk instead of the dog (or with the dog).

How about a back yard game of (anything)!

How about cutting out flour and sugar.

Think about how much of that YOU eat.

Flour turns straight into sugar when it hits your body. Good flour doesn't, but nobody uses that to make anything the average person eats. The flour we eat is so over processed it has no value at all. It is actually bad for you.

Do you know that if they decide you have cancer but aren't sure where it is that they will insert a dye with sugar in it into your body. Why? Because the sugar is what feeds the cancer. The sugar will attract the cancer and show them where it is.

Sugar/flour FEED cancer - and diabetes.

I wonder why our children are obese and have diabetes!

Every time there is an event that is special and/or fun for our children, they are given candy and baked goods.

Not only is it unhealthy for the reasons I've already stated, but it hypes a lot of them up and makes it hard for them to concentrate.

But 50% of the reason for overweight children is lack of exercise.

There are people in Oklahoma working on these issues, but yes, we have a lot of work to do. I am an AmeriCorps Member for Schools for Healthy Lifestyles. I am the Fitness Buddies Coordinator. So here's an idea... Talk to your company / agency / organization about becoming Physical Fitness Volunteers / Mentors (the equivalent to reading / math mentors - but with Physical Fitness) ie: Fitness Buddies. Schools for Healthy LifeStyles will get your company partnered up with a school close in proximity and everyone wins. There is no $ involved, simply a desire to inspire physical activity!

I majored in health physical education and recreation while I was in college. This subject was discussed in two of the classes I took. People need to realization they need to eat some food in all the food groups and not cut out foods for whatever reason. People need to eat in moderation and it would help if kids weren't always sitting in front of the television or in front of the computer.
