I'm all for a longer school day and longer year! Do you really think the teachers will get behind this idea? I've already heard them complaining about the idea saying it will take away from their summer vacation and that they are not paid enough to add another hour to the school day.
The mission of our public education institutions at all levels (primary, secondary, collegiate, career tech) is to do the best they can on one-year budgets. The year begins July 1 and ends June 30. As a parent and taxpayer, I would like to know: Why is it a good idea to start school so early in August? Why not wait until the end of August? Would that help metropolitan areas comply with ozone alert days? Why is it a good idea to pay air conditioning costs in August when teacher and university faculty always seek better salaries-- as they should? Would it help publicly funded amenities like pools and state parks if the summer season lasted a little longer? Why not have a tourism season that matches higher population centers of the country? Do you know that many states have uniform start day laws that equalize instruction before state testing -- it also probably safeguards the summer season for the rest of the state's economy. Why do we test at the end of the 3rd quarter and not the full year? Wouldn't it be a better measure for merit pay to test on a whole year of instruction? Why is it a good idea to start before the first distribution of public funds from the state? It is my understanding that the first distribution of the fiscal year occurs after August 15th and is dependent on July tax revenues. How many times do teachers start the school year without the essential books and curriculum aids they have to wait on because of district cashflow issues? I support a graduated lengthening of the day so that older students have a longer day while younger students have a day they can realistically handle. I support an efficient use of time in the school year and field trips and assemblies have their place if purposeful. I support an instructional year schedule that recognizes the world of working moms and small business owners. Vacation days are limited. It would be a great thing if professional development occurred during the summer instead of various wierd days off during the year. Do we really need a fall break that exists so the teachers' union can have their annual convention? Why isn't this in the summer? Do we really need a uniform week long spring break? Wouldn't a 2 or 3 day break be enough? Why not get back to a Last week of August through Friday before Memorial Day schedule? Thank you for considering my questions and views.

I am an elementary teacher here in the state of Oklahoma and I can tell you that elementary teachers think adding time to the school day is rediculous. I teach at a rural school. Students start arriving at 8:30 and leave at 3:30. Most children ride the bus and many have an hour bus ride home or more. As adults, we typically work an 8 to 9 hour day and we come home exhausted and your brain has not had to be completely engaged for those 9 hours. Now we want to add an hour to their day and expect them to be able to stay focused and on task for 8 hours and then ride the bus for an hour putting them home around 5:30. Barely leaving time for any kind of ball practice, which they all have to do, eat dinner, and homework (maybe). The kids are tired and their brains are done at the end of the day already. They need a little rest, too.
